AI Shortcuts: 30 that actually save you hours

Most people use AI like a search bar: type a vague question, get a vague answer. These AI shortcuts fix that. Copy-paste prompts, keyboard shortcuts and small workflows that work in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or whatever AI you already use.

What is an AI shortcut?

An AI shortcut is anything that gets you a good result from AI faster: a reusable prompt, a key combination, or a tiny routine you run every day. The difference between people who "tried ChatGPT once" and people who save 10+ hours a week is not the tool. It is a handful of shortcuts like these.

Every shortcut below is free, works with the free tiers, and takes less than a minute to try.

12 copy-paste prompt shortcuts

Paste these at the start or end of any request. Replace anything in [brackets].

SHORTCUT 01

The "interview me first" shortcut

The single best AI shortcut. Instead of guessing what you want, the AI asks.

Before you start, ask me the questions you need answered to do this really well. Ask them one at a time.

Why it works: bad answers come from missing context. This makes the AI collect it.

SHORTCUT 02

The 5-part prompt formula

Use this skeleton whenever the answer matters.

Role: You are a [expert, e.g. senior copywriter]. Task: [what you want done]. Context: [who it's for, what you already tried, constraints]. Format: [bullet list / table / email / 200 words]. Quality bar: [what "great" looks like, what to avoid].
SHORTCUT 03

Steal the style

Here is an example of writing I like: [paste]. Describe its style in 5 bullet points, then write [your thing] in exactly that style.
SHORTCUT 04

The brutal editor

Act as a brutally honest editor. List the 5 biggest weaknesses of the text below, ranked by impact. Then rewrite it fixing all of them. Keep my voice. [paste text]
SHORTCUT 05

Explain it like I'm smart but new

Explain [topic] to me like I'm smart but completely new to it. Use one concrete analogy, then the 3 things that actually matter, then the most common beginner mistake.
SHORTCUT 06

Three versions, then pick

Give me 3 very different versions of this: one safe, one bold, one weird. Then tell me which one you'd pick and why.

Why it works: the first answer is the average answer. Asking for range gets you past it.

SHORTCUT 07

The decision maker

I'm deciding between [A] and [B]. My priorities are [list]. Make a table comparing them on what matters to me, point out what I'm not considering, and give me a clear recommendation.
SHORTCUT 08

Summarize anything into actions

Summarize this in 5 bullets, then list every action item with who owns it and a deadline if one is mentioned. Flag anything that sounds urgent. [paste meeting notes, email thread, article]
SHORTCUT 09

Continue where it stopped

Keep the same format and tone. Continue from exactly where you stopped. Don't repeat anything.
SHORTCUT 10

Fact-check yourself

Go through your last answer. Mark every claim as "sure", "likely" or "guess". For anything that is not "sure", tell me how I can verify it.
SHORTCUT 11

Turn it into a template

That worked well. Turn what we just did into a reusable prompt template with [placeholders], so I can paste it next time and get the same result in one step.

This is how you build your own shortcut library without thinking about it.

SHORTCUT 12

Permanent shortcuts with custom instructions

Put this in ChatGPT's Custom Instructions, Claude's Profile preferences or a Gemini Gem, and every chat starts smarter.

Be direct. No filler, no "great question". Use short paragraphs and bullet points. If my request is unclear, ask before answering. When there are trade-offs, tell me your recommendation.

SHORTCUT 19

Learn anything in a week

Make me a 7-day plan to get decent at [skill], 30 minutes a day. Each day: what to learn, one exercise, and how I'll know I got it. Quiz me at the end of each day if I ask.
SHORTCUT 20

Research brief in 2 minutes

Research [topic] and give me: the 5 key facts, the main disagreement between experts, and 3 sources I should actually read. Say clearly which parts you're unsure about.

Works best with web search on (ChatGPT search, Claude web search, Gemini).

The big one: AI that does the work for you

Shortcuts 1โ€“20 make chatting with AI faster. The next level is skipping the chat entirely: AI agents like Claude Code can work directly on your computer. They open files, organize folders, build spreadsheets and websites, and run tasks on a schedule while you do something else.

Four agent shortcuts we use every week:

SHORTCUTS 21โ€“24
Sort every file in my Downloads folder into sensible folders. Don't delete anything. Write an undo script first.
Read these 12 bank CSV exports, categorize every transaction and build me a one-page spending dashboard. Flag subscriptions I probably forgot.
Rename my 2,000 phone photos to date_location format and group them by trip.
Every morning at 7:00, check my inbox, draft replies to anything important and send me a 5-line summary.

Setting that up safely (permissions, undo, what never to let an agent do) is a whole topic. It's what the Claude Operator Playbook covers step by step.

New in October 2026: Anthropic's Claude Duet, an agent that comes to you with a morning brief and drafts your replies before you ask.

AI shortcuts FAQ

What are AI shortcuts?

AI shortcuts are reusable prompts, keyboard shortcuts and small workflows that get a useful result from an AI tool like ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini in seconds instead of minutes. Instead of starting from a blank chat every time, you paste a proven prompt or press a key combination.

Do these AI shortcuts work in ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini?

Yes. The prompt shortcuts are plain text, so they work in any chat AI. Keyboard shortcuts are app-specific and are listed per tool above.

What is the keyboard shortcut for a new chat in ChatGPT?

Ctrl + Shift + O on Windows, Cmd + Shift + O on Mac. Press Ctrl + / inside ChatGPT to see the full current list.

What is the single most useful AI shortcut for beginners?

The "interview me first" shortcut: end any request with "Before you start, ask me the questions you need answered to do this well." The AI collects the missing context and the result is dramatically better.

Are these AI shortcuts free?

Yes. Everything on this page is free and works with the free versions of ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini.
